The Health Centre seen from Honeywall

Background
bpArchitecture were initally appointed along with a Muti disciplinary team in 2016 to produce Stage 1-3 proposals for the redevelopment of part of Stoke Health Centre. The building was originally constructed in tthe 1970's and was outdated with small consulting rooms not capable of delivering current standards of care.

We were then appointed under a separate appointment to produce Stage 4 and tender proposals, with a reduced scope of works to meet allocated funding available. These works were formally tendered.

We were then appointed under a separate appointment to act as Contract Administrator for Stage 5-6 services whilst works were on site. This included Inspecting the Works and managing the contract whilst on site.

Separate appointments coincided with the amalgamation of North Staffs Combined Healthcare and Stoke and Staffordshire Partnership NHS Trust into the Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

Our works included production of an NBS Specification, Stage 1-6 proposals and Internal Finishes proposals.

Brief
The works were largely an Internal refurbishment of parts of the ground floor and a couple of areas at lower ground floor to improved the Health centre.

There were also some essential maintenance works to be carried out to the roof, to combat overheating in the summer months and the issues of glare and leaking rooflights.

The glazed screen to the waiting area was also replaced to improve thermal comfort and glare, and the Main entrance doors and security gates were also replaced to improve the entrance and security.

We initially looked at Part B compliance issues for the Health Centre but the full extent of these works could not be afforded in the available budget and so the Internal refurbishment and essential maintenance of the key areas were confirmed in our brief.

During the contract, as is normal with NHS contracts, additional works were added into the contract to deal with upgrading of some staff offices, Helath ans Safety issues in patient areas. Fire omprovement works to the remainder of the building were set aside for a future contract.

Facilities
Doctors Surgery: One of the smaller consulting rooms was increased in size to provide one of the Doctors with a newly refurbished and larger consulting room with examination space, and more security.

Physiotherapy: Three exisitng rooms were altered to provide an additional Physiotherapy tratment toom and a copier room. An exisitng treatment room was refurbished to provide a further Physiotherapy treatment room.

Baby Changing: A baby changing facility was included in the proposals to provide a dedicatd space for mothers.

Toilet Refurbishment: The ground floor patient toilets were strepped out and refurbished to provide new full height cubicles and vanity wash basins

Staircase: The balustrade to the main staircase from ground to lower ground floors was replaced to remove a health and safety issue with the current staircase as patients passed this.

Pateint Waiting : The glazed external windows were replaced with double glazed UPVC windows with solar controlled glass

Security: A gate was fitted to the main entrance , and CCTV installation was replaced including installaton of a minitoring station at lower ground floor to improved overall security and staff protection.

Store: Works at ground floor included improvements to the Means of Escape which involved forming a corridor separating ground floor stores and improving archive shelving in these stores.

Finishes: Floor and Ceilign Finishes, HTM fixtures and decorations were included to all areas where works were carried out.

Internal Doors and Partitions : All new internal partitions and doors were put in to meet current part B, cincluding provision of veneered solid doors wiht vision panels to rooms where works were carried out. Fire compartmentation in ceiling voids where works were carried out to , CCTV, Electric and External Lighting. Further fire improvement works to exisitng doors elsehwere in the centre were set aside for a different futur contract due to budget constraints.

Principle Elevation glare: Brize soleil were fitted to 6 consulting rooms and the Patient waiting room to deal with solar glare onto the facade.

Rooflights: Rooflights over consulting rooms and offices were all replaced as these were leaking, these were fitted with Solar control and openable to reduce overheating.

Roof: The roof was finished with anti glare paint to assist with overheating at ground floor.

Social Value
Staff at Ground floor were working in hot and stuffy offices and consulting rooms, those that had rooflights increased heat exposure and added in dripping rain exposure.

Patients in the waiting area, were either cold or too hot from the large expanse of glass to waiting room windows.

Nightime secuirty was poor and vagrants were often found sleeping in the entrance and doorways, or attepting to break in via the roof.

The interna circulation staircase had hardwood handrails with square balustrades that did not meet current part K requirements and were dangerous to young children.

The comleted works improved staff and patient comfort whilst in the office areas and consulting rooms. Improved thermal comfort at both ends of the spectrum in the waiting areas.

New modern finishes helped to vastly improve the overall Health Centre experince for staff and patients with bright airy spaces with colour privacy and dignity and safety greatly improved.
