Background
This project was constructed as part of the second phase of an £18 million campus masterplan to upgrade the College facilities to meet the requirements of current Building Standards and to attract more Students in a competing environment. The existing Engineering block was one of the first buildings visitors see as they enter the college campus and was a conglomerate of buildings with asbestos and single skin cladding and very poor appearance.

Work commenced on site in early 2008, superstructure was completed for August 2008.

Ethos
The recladding of the existing building was designed to break up the long low Engineering façade, different cladding treatments were incorporated to break down the overall mass of the building and to provide textural relief and the appearance of several separate buildings. The Building now also incorporates the college entrance signage letting visitors know when they enter the car park that they have ‘arrived’. . .

Facilities
The cladding conceals engineering workshops, engineering offices and stores and parking areas for vehicles the engineering department is servicing.

Special gates were designed to allow access to the engineering zone behind and were clad to appear identical to the lower level building cladding system.

The finished re-clad building now provides an attractive setting and backdrop to one side of the college entrance drive, providing a good first impression of facilities provided at the college, when compared to what is on offer on other campus’s.
